What to Expect at Your First Medical Weight Loss Evaluation

By Michelle Perry, APRN, FNP-C·March 2026·5 min read

One of the most common questions we get: “What actually happens at the first visit?” The short answer — we listen. The longer answer is below.

At MP Integrative Medicine, no treatment begins without a comprehensive evaluation. This isn't a formality — it's the foundation of everything that follows. Here's exactly what that looks like.

Before your visit

After booking your consultation, you'll complete intake paperwork through our secure patient portal before your first appointment. This includes:

  • Health history questionnaire
  • Current medications and supplements
  • Previous weight loss history and what you've tried
  • Your goals and what you're hoping to achieve
  • Telehealth consent and HIPAA acknowledgment

Completing this thoroughly before your visit means we can spend your appointment time on conversation and clinical assessment — not paperwork.

During your evaluation

Your first visit is a full clinical evaluation. For our Ohio telehealth patients, this happens via video or phone — and we confirm your location in Ohio at the start of every visit.

We cover a lot of ground:

Weight history

We want to understand your full trajectory — not just where you are now, but how you got here. Childhood weight patterns, significant life events, previous attempts, what worked and what didn't.

Metabolic indicators

BMI, body composition context, comorbidities (like insulin resistance, prediabetes, sleep apnea, or elevated lipids), and any relevant family history.

Medication history

Current and past medications — including anything that may affect weight or metabolism. Some medications cause weight gain as a side effect, and that matters.

Contraindication review

Certain conditions and medications are contraindications for GLP-1 therapy. We review these thoroughly before any treatment decision is made.

Your goals

Not just a number on a scale — what does success actually look like for you? What would change in your daily life? What are you most concerned about?

Labs

After your evaluation, we'll order labs as clinically indicated. At minimum, this includes a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) — and additional labs depending on your history and clinical picture.

You can have these drawn at any local lab near you. We'll review the results and discuss them with you before finalizing your treatment plan.

After your evaluation

Once your evaluation is complete and labs are reviewed, we build your individualized treatment plan. If GLP-1 based metabolic therapy is clinically appropriate, we'll discuss medication options, dosing, what to expect, and how to manage any side effects.

Your plan will also include nutrition guidance and a follow-up schedule — typically at 4 weeks, then every 4–8 weeks depending on your progress.

What if I'm not a candidate?

Not everyone who comes to us for a weight management evaluation will be a candidate for GLP-1 therapy — and that's okay. If that's the case, we'll tell you clearly and honestly, and we'll discuss what other approaches might be appropriate for your situation.

The evaluation is about finding the right path for you — not fitting you into a predetermined program.
